Prion?

This guy looks like a Robert Prion model. I could be wrong, as I never cared much for Prion, thinking his his career was during that horrible period of gay porn, 1988-1995 (post film, pre hi quality digital). But the GEVI listing seems to have him as working as a director much earlier, as early as 1980 – could that be right? and who is this guy above?

I suppose you already knew this, but I found the picture listed as follows:

ANDY WARHOL (1928-1987)
Unidentified Man
unique gelatin silver print
10 x 8 in. (25.4 x 20.3 cm.)
Executed circa 1980.

Hey BJ, have you ever reconsidered Robert Prion’s work or watched any more of his films? He didn’t make the cut for your director page (I know you limit that to the ones you feel are elite and worthy of mention), and this post is one of the few times you’ve mentioned his name.

You did talk about him and share a short clip on the 1.0 version of your blog, in November 2002 – now there’s a blast from the past! Another Steel Magnolias quote that rattles around my brain, but trying to stay on point here. The clip seems to be gone now but from the thumbnail that’s Jay Richards with a soon-to-be-exploding dick in his face, from Guys Just Can’t Stop (1985).

I reviewed two of his films from later in the 80s just recently, The Wild Guys (1987 per the closing credits, not 1986 as gevi says now) and then Men Who Dare (1988). Both of these have Jay starring in the film and having sex, Robert himself appears in both also but only has sex in TWG. In MWD he buys beer for one of the guys who is 18 but not 21 yet, and semi-discreetly passes the paper bag to him outside the liquor store but that non-sex cameo was it.

Most of the cast was always guys in the 20-25 y.o. range from their looks, with a few exceptions aside from Jay and ‘Uncle Bob’ who were a real life couple for years. Jay was a few years older than Bob, assuming gevi is right and he was also known as Ernie Matthews in AMG loops dating back to 1963 (which would make his date of birth mid 40s probably). While per this informative obit article after Robert died not long ago, he was born in 1952.

Be sure to check out the comments as there was more info there too. 1982 seems to be when he started his Video Visuals studio, with The Boys From New Jersey. Not sure when he hopped on the shot-on-videotape bandwagon but could have been earlier than most. A few distinctive things about him that I’ve discovered from digging around and watching the two I mentioned above:

– as you said in your 2002 post he filmed short opening and closing scenes where someone (often Jay I assume) would say the name of the film while some headless dick cums. That happens at the beginning of The Wild Guys also.

– and as you also said in 2002, the stolen music (presented as non-stop DJ sets that fade out a few times for dialogue or scene cuts) is fantastic! I think he just thought ‘copyrights be damned’ and power to him for that, I found many well-known songs in the two movies I posted about. PSBs, Erasure, Depeche Mode, New Order, even at least one Madonna song; plus more I haven’t identified yet.

– somewhat shorter scenes than many of his contemporaries, so that he could include more pairings per tape I assume (8-9 scenes as opposed to 4-5)

– Robert and Jay lived in Woodbridge NJ and filmed a lot of the scenes at their house, some of the rooms have low ceilings so Jay especially, but all of them tended to look like they were crammed into a dollhouse or something. Which sounds weird but I got used to and found somewhat endearing. With a rotating stable of guys, a few of whom worked for other studios too (Rick and Dane Thomas, Joey Stefano) but many more solely for them.

– and finally I saw no condoms in either the 87 or 88 movies, which was still common as the studios hadn’t made the switch to safe sex yet en masse. But apparently he was still showing actors raw fucking and slurping up cum into the early 90s even after Falcon had made the switch, and they were the last of the major studios to do so. A review of one of his films from 1992 in the B.A.R. (I linked to it in my post for TWG) called Robert out for both the bareback sex as well as the stolen music, and made a few digs at Robert’s appearance too which sounded just catty.

Sorry for the long comment I just wondered if you were more familiar with him or his work in the years since you mentioned him before. And if you’ve still got that clip of the dick exploding in Jay’s face that might be cool to see again! Or maybe the opening from TWG which was multiple guys cumming all over Jay before he said the film name.
