Boy’s Guide To

Physical Fitness

I’m sure I’ve mentioned how some physique/muscle periodicals used an interesting technique to get around censors when trying to publish nudes, specifically frontal. They’d paint, in watercolor, over the naughty bits, a swimsuit or posing strap, or whatever – mail the magazine out, and the “in the know” customer would gently remove the color with a wet brush. Here are a few examples from JR. Magazine – can you guess my favorite?

great question! – and I’ve been struggling to find documentation for what I’ve saying – maybe it was in the printing process somehow – I’ve read it in multiple places years back, failed to note or bookmark, and now don’t know how to answer this – but I want to know more!

In some cases, out of desperation I suppose, they would go through and actually cut out all the crotches with an exacto blade. I don’t know much about this myself- just what I’ve read. I love the paint reveal though. How clever.

My favorite of this bunch is Tod Hunter. Although I could do without the Xanadu posing strap.

Oh hey! Look at that. But, how can you have cock shadow if you’re wearing a posing strap?! Well… you can’t!!

I can’t believe I missed that. I was really just thinking, who is the hottest?

It really can be tough to tell what was done to the crotch area on any of these. Like, the Rusty Williams photo- he’s clearly wearing a strap, but my guess is that it was mesh originally, so they had to go even further with ink to cover it up and get around the censors. I think it’s a really interesting time in history for gay men and the evolution of porn. I guess that was your point.

Oh, and cock shadow!!
