Wow, thanks so much for this post! What I’ve read about Christopher, and the films I’ve seen that were made by him, are really interesting. Not always the best in jack off material, but fascinating to look at his filmmaking and editing techniques, the use of sound, that kind of stuff. I used to have a VHS copy of Orgy that some loser tweaker stole from me, grrrr, though I think it was a re-released version and not the original.
That link to the Paul Morris article has this quote towards the beginning: “…he’d been a serious songwriter (serious enough to have had one of his songs recorded by the legendary 70s group The Spinners…” I think I’ve mentioned to you how much I am interested in the music that was used in gay porn from the 70s and 80s, so reading this line grabbed my attention and got me to digging around on various sites, and I found the song he’s talking about – it’s called With My Eyes and was on the Spinners’ 1979 album Dancin’ and Lovin’:
The only songwriting credits I could find for Chris/Trey were all songs he co-wrote with Doug James, but in case you or any of your readers want to see it, some were recorded by other artists as well:
WOW indeed – thanks for the research (this is why I finally opened up “comments” a few years back) – seems more and more of the Christopher Rage info on the web is disappearing – check this out – http://recordrobot.blogspot.com/2006/03/terrible-rage.html – vinyl The Singing Rage – “My face seats two, there’s room for you/ And you can even bring a friend along,/ So pleased to seat you, I’m Freddie Pig.”
We seem to work well in tandem, how bout that? Because after reading the 2006 blog post you linked I searched youtube and found one of the songs from this album I knew nothing about, Better You:
Too bad the two sound clips that were linked to that blog have disappeared, Hot Rocker and Freddie Pig, since I bet they would be pretty cool as well. Did you happen to snag the Freddie song while it was still up? Or maybe you’ve heard it yourself since you were able to quote the lyrics. Champagne & Cocaine sounds like it would be wild as well… the song, not… well you know ;)
Speaking of Chris Rage, as we were here about 9 years ago (!) you started a category for him even longer ago:
Which has a short clip from Outrage (the one with all the candles in the foreground) which I think you may have posted a longer version of, somewhere? Can’t recall that at the moment, I’ve watched the whole film and that scene is definitely a highlight. But you could add at least this post to the existing category, not that I’m trying to find more blog work for you or anything.
The other reason I sought out this post was to tell you that somebody uploaded his Best of the Superstars to the archive recently, which I’m considering for an upcoming review. I feel confident you’ve seen it, maybe you even have it on videotape? It’s got highlights from his films Solojerk and Superstars 1 & 2, along with him doing a sort of narration before each scene starts. And then Chris himself jacking off solo in the final scene recapping the action while stroking off.
Also of note, two Richard Locke scenes (one solo and then paired with Scorpio and another guy), Scorpio again with Casey Donovan, a pretty hot Scott Taylor solo, and then a scene with George Payne and mustached Lee Marlin sharing a third guy. Links below if you or anyone are interested in this:
Five of the eight scenes are solos, and as it turns out Richard Locke is not in scene 6, just Scorpio and Philip Demato. Scorpio also appears having sex with Casey Donovan in the first (and longest) scene which was pretty good, Casey gets all sweaty and wide-eyed as he often looked in his later porn years, like in Heatstroke and Aspen 1. ‘Tweaked out Casey’ as I called him in my review.
And George Payne and Lee Marlin take turns on John Wilson in the third scene, I loved seeing the old fashioned popper that required actually popping the tube, the way those used to be made. Not to mention Lee and especially George who looked great all over, especially his hard dick.
While Scott Taylor’s solo was interesting and worth watching (he had an attractive face, beautiful eyes and of course that huge cock) and the others are at least decent (including Rage’s own solo at the end with his summaries of the earlier scenes) the real reason to check this one out is the fifth scene with Richard’s solo.
Starting outside in lower Manhattan in a 3-piece suit, he goes inside an apartment and pulls out a porn magazine that he uses for inspiration as he jacks off. With Woody from GEVI’s help we identified not only the issue (Mandate, July 1980) but also which pages and models he looks at as the mag is propped up against the mantle: Craig Dudley on page 52; and Michael Sisk on page 38. Plus whatever the page numbers were for the centerfold of (I think) Michael which is only shown sideways and very briefly.
It’s apparently Michael that Richard gives a ‘tribute’ to and shoots his load onto at the end of the scene, which has stationary camera shots of Richard. One in a mirror and the primary shot in profile, with his head cut off but featuring the rest of him down to his legs. Woody added my longer description of this scene to the movie listing. Do you have this issue of Mandate? I don’t collect them the way you and others like Johnny do, and couldn’t find the exact issue in the places I normally check:
I find all of this fascinating. I don’t have that whole issue of Mandate, I just have the Michael Sisk spread. Those eyes! I am definitely gonna’ re-watch that Richard Locke scene. Dunno’ why I don’t remember it, but based on your description, I need to see it!
Thanks for the comments and the great links.
interesting – i can find an issue where Richard is in a suit, quite possibly THE suit – pics here and here – October 1979; but I sold my July 1980 issue back in the purge of 2017.
Michael Sisk is the cover? Only ID’d in magazine as “MANDATE MAN”
did i ferget to say thanks for the tip on the upload? THANKS!!!
No problem, I thought of you almost as soon as I found it. The clip uploaded to the archive seems to be the full 90 minute version. Though curiously, if you go to the gevi page (which Woody has now added the specific pages of the Mandate issue to the description I sent him, since he told me he has it) and click on the AEBN link, that version is only 60 minutes – and seems to be missing Richard’s solo. I wonder how widely seen this collection even was!
I checked Cowboy Frank’s site and he has full scans of a few Mandates from 1980, but is missing July. The cover is blink-and-you-miss-it, right after Richard sets down the newspaper and walks with the mag further inside the apartment. But that was enough for me to tell the title ended in -ATE and guess the MAND- at the beginning, and match it with the cover from Wonderclub.
The best views of the pages he’s looking at are when the mag is propped up on the mantle, and he flips the pages a few times. So if anyone had that issue as Woody said he does, that would be how to confirm which pages he was looking at, and the particular one he shot his load onto.
Thanks Zephyr! I’m a fan of Superstars, in particular the Scott Taylor solo which I’ve always thought was different from many of his other performances, but very hot.
I’ve also been fascinated by Christopher Rage’s work, but not always turned on, like you said. He’s undeniably unique and a true gay porn pioneer.

Following up to add that I did wind up reviewing this collection recently, with most but not all of the scenes from Rage’s earliest films:
