HIM monthly

Just acquired an American issued copy of HIM Monthly – this from 1980. This top pic grabbed my attention because, at first glance – yup. But no.

Short post – photography by Alan Purnell, who I’m anxious to learn more about, as he is also a director, and editor of the HIM magazines.

I’m also a fan of Alan Purnell and HIM Monthly. Seems like you’ve been teasing Alan Purnell for a long time on BJLand when I go back and look over the posts. I’m not sure I ever realized that “Workout” was from Alan Purnell. I never made that connection. I am a huge fan of that film, it was uniquely different and it was hot! Daddy Toby! Beefy Morgan Winner with his geyser-like cum shot!

I wanna’ know more about Alan Purnell now, too!

From this issue: I really love the classic tats on the bicep of the model in that middle pic. I love ho w the arm stretches all the way across and the cocks hanging above, one in shadow, the other more in the light. Great composition. I assume this is not the entire spread. Or I guess the top photo is separate from the bottom 2? And we don’t know which issue from 1980? Not a biggie. I’m just curious to see more. Maybe I can find it on my own.

Just FYI: The Alan Purnell BJLand link didn’t work for me for some reason. I just did the search myself. And found the Workout connection!

Thanks BJ!

link – fixed! (thanks for noticing) – can’t find a date or issue # – but here’s some additional pics

1st image is back cover, and that is all I saw when I bid, and won the eBay auction. next is front cover, and 2nd page.

Finally, yes, 1st pic is separate photo session – KEVIN – and the soccer boys were also on the cover, see below

Thanks!! I couldn’t find anything from the issue in my HIM folder. I have fewer issues than I’d like, and nothing from 1980.

So weird that there is no indication of which issue #. It couldn’t have been the first issue in the US or something, could it? I was always super confused by all the different subtitles. “HIM Exclusive,” “HIM Monthly,” even just “HIM Magazine.” Maybe this was just a special issue. Not a monthly.

Anyway, thanks!

I think the magazine explicitly says this is the first issue in the USA – implying there will be more. Don’t know if that happened. and the 2nd photo – other than a bit of cropping at the edge of the photo, that is the way it appeared in the magazine – I rarely like to use an image with “the fold” – but I agree with you, great shot, so did my best with flattening it enough that it doesn’t look too bad.

I really love that 2nd pic from the top (of the orig post). I can’t get over it. That eye staring at you from the upper right. Great photo. If you cropped it, you did a really good job.

It seems a bit confusing with all the variants of this magazine title, and you all may already have these but I found scans of a few Him magazines at the link below. Him Monthly (1979, issue 21) and Him Magazine (1989, issue 28):

I couldn’t remember if I had left that link here before, I only bookmarked it a short while ago. I have a tendency to fly by the seat of my pants when I come here to BJ’s land o’ gay porn and don’t always commit everything to memory so I know I’ve repeated myself before, and probably will again. Things get explained or questions answered and all I can call up is the unknown aspect that used to exist when it was filed away in my brain, anyway…

That site has a few scans of another British gay mag called Zipper that seems to also have been relaunched at some point, after going under. I have a few physical copies of this mag but they are from 97 / 98 and what’s most notable about them, is that they are slightly taller than the rest of the full sized mags I’ve hung onto like Torso, Mandate, Inches etc. So I have to store them at the bottom of the stack which makes sense anyway since they start with the letter Z (like zephyr lol). I’d been meaning to flip through them again and since I pulled them out I may as well do that today.

Whoever runs that site just added a new scan, Prowler Press Gold Collection: The Best of Mike Arlen which he gives 1992 as the date. He doesn’t have a huge collection of scans there but I was glad to have run across it. Hope you were able to find some of what he has that filled in gaps for you too.

Zephyr!

It’s a great link, an excellent resource, and I think maybe you have posted it before, but it never hurts to post again. As good as some of these internet sites are, we can forget or procrastinate. I waited on that awesome link you posted with Drummer mags, and then it went offline and continues to be down. Might never come back. I was so bummed! I keep checking though. I looove Drummer.

I saw the Zipper and the others. It’s awesome. I’m trying to make use of it, but I’ve had trouble finding time and energy for porn lately. It’s ironic, because it’s one of the things I enjoy most.

Anyway, whatever you do, or however you do it, it’s appreciated.

Re: the Drummer magazines, it was probably one of two sites I know I’ve seen. Either the guy on scribd who had 1-20 and a few more assorted ones, and then ‘cowboy Frank’ whose site has gone down a number of times lately. Last I checked cowboy is back up on the saddle though you may have to substitute different suffixes in the url, it seems I’ve seen it as either dot-net or even dot-men. At one point he had a note on one of the other sections of his sites (they are all connected together via links) that said there was a big snowstorm, he couldn’t make it out to the shed to check or fix … something, I forget now. Some of his other sites are all about gay rodeo associations and other interests. I can’t find the scribd site now or remember the name of the uploader (Solomon? is a guess) so maybe that’s what you were talking about, but I know BJ has linked to cowboy F’s site in the past – pretty sure I found out about him through here.

Yeah, I think it was Cowboy Frank- but I thought that was you! Oh well, thanks to BJ then. And I’m loving the Hard Copy Archive, and I know that was you.

Cowboy Frank is back up now. I’m gonna’ see what he has! There’s so much to see here at BJLand also. I’m so behind!
