Hy Chase

all together now – “languishing in my drafts folder….” was an attempt to document at least some periodicals featuring photography from HY CHASE – an effort I’ve had on my “to do” list before, so back at least 4 years. So – let’s just see what we have, edit a tad, hit publish, right?

From 1973-1978, Hy Chase photography was featured in In Touch magazine. In the late-1970s, he photographed most of the male models featured in the Janus series of publications. (Source: In Touch for Men, Hy Chase Special magazine) That’s the one shown above and just below, which – all together now – “I sold in an eBay auction back in….” 2004. I would also add I think he did at least some of the photography for the “Satyr” series as well. A few others mentioned below.

  • In Touch Vol1 No4 (1974) – 6-page BRUCE MORGAN spread
  • IN TOUCH: SPECIAL EDITION #1 (1975?)
  • IN TOUCH: SPECIAL EDITION #2 (1975?)
  • In Touch Portrait of Wally (1975?)
  • In Touch Portrait of Todd Peterson (1975?)
  • In Touch Portrait of Steve Nettles (1975?)
  • In Touch Portrait of David Miller (1975?)
  • In Touch Portrait of Chuck Ballard (1975?)
  • In Touch Portrait of Bob Diewit, Paul Rehus (AKA David Carter?), And John Hemm (1975?)

  • Drummer 12 (1977) – Intermountain Logging Company

This is a great profile, even if there is more to know about Hy Chase. You don’t need to qualify it. Putting together a profile on a photographer is a lot of work. You rocked it!

I personally have way more notes and info on performers and models than on photographers and directors. The Satyr and Janus publications provide so little information- no credits. Even the model’s name is false in most if not all of them (right?) Wait, the “Bruce” issue- that one has Bruce McMaster AKA Dave McMaster. But was anybody even calling him Bruce until that mag came out?!? I don’t know.

I love the In Touch stuff too. I didn’t realize he had Drummer credits, but why the hell not?

It’s too bad he isn’t as well known also. It’s funny how some are well known and others are less so. Jim French/Rip Colt is the big name that comes to mind when you think about masculine erotic photography in the 1970s and deservedly so, but we know there were others working before and during his time who were just as worthy of consideration.

I love looking through these covers!

But why are the Janus (and some of the Satyr) publications always on Volume 4? I have never seen Vol 1, 2, or 3. And I swear in some cases there are two mags by Janus with different models and somehow they’re the same volume & issue number. “Hud” and “Scott” above are both V4 N3. Hmmmm.

Great post! Thanks BJ!

Here’s one to add:

In Heat No1 (1977) (from In Touch)
He probably was in other issues of In Heat, right?

There’s Playguy & Blueboy credits as well. That’s after just a rudimentary search of my hard drive. Not as easy to come up with all the actual issue nos & dates. I should be taking better notes. Still, there’s just too many to list them all. That’s a lot of work.

Playguy Vol 5 No 7 (1980) That’s one.

YES! In Heat #1 – a photo spread called “Boiler Room” which looks rather different for Chase; will have to check more In Heat (went thru issues 2-6, noting w/CHhse, but some uncredited photos in issue 2)

– I don’t have Playguy Vol 5 No 7 so once I see it, I can add that, too!

Well. How embarrassing. I don’t have the full issue, just one spread by Usher and some notes which I got from GEA. Otherwise I’d send it ASAP. The notes said that there was a section with photos from various photographers and that Hy Chase was one of them. So it might’ve been just a single pic. I don’t even know the model name.
How disappointing. Sorry!

I’m not sure what markers you’re looking for to identify the Hy Chase style, and it might just be more instinct, but how about Dusty Vol4 No5 (1978 Janus)? Could that be one of the Janus mags he was in? I’m sure you know the one- with Brad Dillon aka Steve Packard. The time period is right. And I feel like Eros and Janus/Satyr were related. I don’t know why I think that right now, but I put it in my notes at one time. It was just a guess.

Playguy Vol 5 No 7 – I have the hard copy – but its in a box, a box I can’t lift! – my only notes say: Lyle (Usher); Guy Tait & Tony Craig (NOVA)

Lucky you! I mean, once you find a way to get it out of the box. Well, I don’t think it’s on Adonis Male. Not that I could find.

One more thing and then that’s all:

I search SmutJunkies print section for keyword “Hy Chase.” Quite a lot comes up. Mostly In Touch. And a bunch of incorrect results due to porn stars called “Chase.” But a few interesting tidbits.
