carpet

Apparently I’ve posted about the blanket before; I hadn’t realized that the below pic was also already posted, and that what I thought was 2 mystery stars, is probably Bert Edwards and a buddy. These pics are from a publication called simply HIS, published in 1978 that includes photos of Phillip & Michael, and Joe Markhum and Jim – making me think they have something to do with Magnum Griffin (as there are a couple of one-off shots I’ve seen in MG mags before) – but who knows?

One reply on “carpet”

I know that carpet! Blanket?

I know we talked about this a few times, and you posted about it, but we never really figured it out. Just that it shows up in a bunch of apparently unrelated mags. Kind of a mystery! I think we were of the mind that it was some photographer’s or studio’s prop, but no idea which one.

HIS mag, or His? I’m not familiar with this. I’m intrigued. I see the two photos are both from HIS. I’m a bit confused- are you saying that is Bert Edwards (aka Jean Cardin) in the bottom photo? I don’t think it’s the guy kneeling. It looks to me like Bert Edwards in the top photo, on his back. What do you say?

And you must’ve looked at Bert/Burt/Jean’s GEVI profile

while preparing for this post- I think he (Woody) mentions the blanket! But there must be a typo, b/c the mag he says the blanket appears in, “69 Sunset Strip No1,” DOES NOT have any appearance of the blanket. I checked. It has Bert with Duke Richards and Bert with Andy Markos, but no pink, yellow & black bed “cover” on page 12 (or any other page of that mag). The yellow part doesn’t really make sense- more like orange. But the pink and black sure do. I am either reading this wrong or Woody put in the wrong mag title. Is it annoying that I always abbreviate magazine as “mag?” It annoys me. I am not typically an abbreviator. I digress.

OK, in the mag…azine called “A Wild Weekend” the blanket does appear quite a lot. In a pairing with Bert and Duane which is a match to the top photo here in this post. Just figuring this out as a I type. Yes, the top pic is Bert on his back with Duane Ferguson and his heart tattoo on top. The blanket does appear to be pink, yellow & black in that magazine. Definitely the same blanket though. “A Wild Weekend” also features Dakota and Jim Cassidy. I either don’t have the other mags mentioned or stopped looking for right now. I do kind of want to check for more appearances of the blanket. And for the two fellas on the blanket in the bottom pic from this post. It’s a great photo. I don’t love the pink lighting, but the kneeling guy is quite athletic and photogenic.

I know no one else cares perhaps, but I find it fascinating that this magic carpet or blanket (or whatever) prop that was used in gay porn during the 1970s is haunting us like this. It’s a bizarre phenomenon. Part of what makes gay porn so fun for me. I try to explain this to people and they just don’t get it. How do you explain that being a connoisseur(?) of gay porn isn’t just about drooling over hot men. Although that is admittedly a big part of it.

Thanks once again, BJ, for stimulating my imagination… among other things.
