Continuing my (see Nova Project – yes, 2015! ) I pop the cassette for The Main Attraction into the VCR, and of course it starts with
WAIT!!! – oops! This has been in the “drafts” folder since 2015! last re-worked in 2022, picked tis up again last week when I had a backlog of nearly 50 draft posts. Sooooooo – CLEAN UP time! finish ’em up, post as is, or delete. Down to about 36 once I hit “publish: on this one… So, where were we?
- The Main Attraction – Bo Richards and, Jeffrey Scott, and the great tune Substitute by Liquid Gold, followed by what I think is the instrumental/extended mix of Teena Marie’s I’m Just a Sucker for Your Love, followed by someone’s disco version of Another One Bites the Dust? or a CHIC megamix of sorts…. segue into Don’t Stop The Music mixed in with a bit of the instrumental of Heart of Glass

- It’s the Life (1982 NF-106) with Giorgio Canali and Bill Curry – Giorgio Moroder’s E=MC²

- Neighborhood Watch (1982 NF-111) with Jon King , Buddy Preston, and hairy Brad Peters
OK OK – let’s hop over to YorjYefferson’s vintage gay porn music master list part 2 for some help – so I’ve posted the relevant portion (this video – all 3 films) of the list at the bottom of this post.

Impressive, thanks for helping to pad out the known songs in this one! And for finding the correct part of those porn music posts that I mostly did, because a few years ago I had thought I lost all the files on my old desktop before having backed them up, and when I got them back I made those posts so the info would be out there. Even if I’m about the only one who knows where I put them. I’ve now updated my master list and while I haven’t been updating the reddit posts usually, I’ll make an exception and give you credit for your contributions.
I never reviewed the Nova Main Attraction but I did do the Catalina / Image Video ‘remake’ from 1988:
https://gayeroticvideoindex.com/video/1496
Which I mostly remember for the mud wrestling scene with Tim Lowe and Peter Ashley. And it being late period Costello P. for the music, which became a lot more hodgepodge, new-age stuff mixed in by other uncredited musicians and not as good or original as his earlier work. Oh yeah, and the Brian Adams / Butch Taylor in the museum scene too was pretty good. It was all right for that late 80s era anyway.
I know I’ve seen this original and will rewatch the scenes when I get the chance. The threeway with Buddy, Brad and Jon was quite good, I know I enjoyed that scene.
do you really think that’s a remake? or are the “QUOTES” showing me you’re being silly? What was most interesting about the soundtrack is that I am fairly confident a DJ must’ve done it – part of the difficulty in ID’ing some of the music was that the tunes were mixed in (and out) – can’t remember a clear example (oh, Heart of Glass). And if you watch the entire tape without breaking it up like I did for the post, you’ll see the music goes straight thru and doesn’t even fade out between individual clips.
Nova’s stolen music was all over the map, sometimes just one song leading into another. While others like this one, yes I believe you’re right that it was a primitive DJ set-up (‘two turntables and a microphone’) and an unknown person with access to some records who decided to spin it together. A few Falcon ones have that same effect from the early videotape years, and then Robert Prion’s movies brought that to the forefront, unapologetically swiping many new wave and dance hits of the time he made those. But DJs can, and do, switch between records (old school DJ-ing) and fade the tracks in and out, for various reasons. Which just makes it even harder to i.d. every song heard.
In my review for the 1988 Main Attraction I said this: “Apparently Scott [Masters] saw this movie as a remake or homage to an earlier Nova film he made with the same title though I didn’t see a lot that connected the two.” Which had me retracing my steps to figure out why I said that, and I landed on this blog post Josh Eliot wrote for Bijou:
https://bijouworld.com/Gay-Porn/We-Waited-8hrs-For-A-Cum-Shot-Is-That-A-World-Record.html
… where one of the later paragraphs starts with: “Another more draining situation came on the movie The Main Attraction. This was a homage to his Nova Video movie of the same name. Matt Powers was Catalina’s new exclusive, and Scott Masters’ secret (at the time) obsession.” So that must have been why that landed in my head. Josh is still churning out those posts there and many of them are interesting, though I keep experiencing 404 errors when I try to link to their site.
Brian Adams & Butch Taylor YUM!
The musical elements of this post are mostly going over my head, once again. I’ll leave that to the expertise of BJ and Zephyr. Although I did quite enjoy the fun disco beat at the beginning of each film clip, particularly Main Attraction. They were very similar in each film. I guess that’s pretty standard for porn soundtracks of the era. Although I think I prefer the instrumentals over the vocals.
Bo Richards’ weirdly sped up dancing in the first one was pretty funny. Why did they do that, I wonder? It looked more sped up than usual in films from that time. Maybe it was just the normal film speed? They should’ve told him to dance slowly and it might have looked almost normal. Not that he didn’t also look really good in that skin tight disco outfit – and see, sparkles make the disco outfit! You gotta have sparkles. Then it got more interesting when Bo’s clothes came off and he continued dancing. Then of course things got really good and downright steamy as it progressed.
I thoroughly enjoyed all three clips. So much to enjoy in each one. Hot men, period clothes & hair, the settings, and even the music (although not all). You know, why haven’t they come up with some AI way to slow the films down so that Jon & Buddy don’t look like they’re banging their faces together when kissing. One of the things I love in modern gay is when they include extended kissing. That so often gets left out. It can be soooo hot.
Congrats on reducing your drafts folder so well BJ!
Thanks for these terrific films. My appreciation for Nova continues to grow and grow. If you remember I told you at some point that I hadn’t always been as familiar with Nova in the past as I had been with other studios. I was so into Colt & Falcon. It was the 90s & 00s and at first I’d look around at the porn of the day and there was so much CRAP. When I discovered retro/vintage gay porn I was in heaven. But it took a long time to learn about all the different studios. Hey! Where were you when I needed you? Haha. When I found Nova I didn’t pay much attention at first, perhaps because the actors were often very young men, kinda twinkish and I was more into daddies & hairy guys, muscles & mustaches. But there’s more range if you look for it. Brad Peters sure satisfied in the hairy guy department. If I’d paid better attention, I might’ve become one of the biggest Nova fans.
You and Zephyr are very knowledgable with the music. I’m always impressed.
