HANDsome Roy

Love Roy Garrett! Love this movie, and love the music from this movie!

The music sounds a bit like Patrick Cowley’s stuff but it looks to be too early-seventies for that. (anyway, I have much of his electronica/ambient music that was used in porn and I don’t recognize that track)

The only guy here that really grabs my eyes is that one man (pops up seated in the audience about halfway through) who looks like some college Psych professor. He whips it out, unbuttons his shirt and makes me wish I was 18 again and in need of some “tutoring”…

i wonder if it’s Man Parrish? he did the music for Heatstroke, which was only a year later (1981 vs. 1982). Looks like he also provided some music for Roy Garrett’s live performances.

ha – if you scroll down you’ll see I answered my own question by looking through my own website – yup, it’s Man Parrish alright – and i believe some of the same music was used in Joe Gage’s – oops, I mean Tim Kincaid’s – Breeders.

I agree about the music BJ, any idea who did it? It has a bit of the Patrick Cowley vibe to my ears, but I don’t know enough about it to say for sure. Wondered if there are credits on the film, or box cover (gevi doesn’t say).

oh you guys! now I’m gonna have to dig out the tape! (lord knows it could be 2 feet from me but I wouldn’t know it!)

I actually didn’t even see Scott’s comment when I left mine, must have scrolled right past it. Or maybe it registered in my brain subconsciously. Anyway didn’t want you to feel like we were tag teaming you… as it were ;)

That’s interesting about Man Parrish, I don’t think I knew that he had done porn scores as well as Pat.

too funny – sometimes it’s weeks between comments, and actually Scott’s was in the “to be approved queue” so I had just approved his, made my comment, and yours appeared. Then after digging up the VHS (the clip I posted was actually taken from a compilation, Wet Sports, I checked on my own page, saw the answer, but was already so far in, and the tape was playing, and the music was too good! I wonder if I make a digital copy of the entire film, if I someone can pull the soundtrack/music off of it. You can even hear Roy Garrett reading his own poetry during other parts of the film, mixed in with some other dirty talker.

so, i had to consult the Joe Gage expert – https://bjland.ws/directors/joegage.html – scroll down to HANDsome…. or I can copy and paste it here.

This film is often dismissed and misunderstood, but it’s a favorite of mine. Basically about guy’s jerking off, with some oral action, but what strings it together are phone calls to “Joe” suggesting locales and scenarios for …. an orgy? …a film? Or are these just audio jack-off tapes that filmmkaer Gage is listening to, imagining how he’d film them? – If you’ve seen Heatstroke, then you’ll see that this film served more or less as a pre-cursor to it, with some of the techniques being tested in HANDsome, and used more successfully, in Heatstroke. Starring J.D. Slater, Ron Clayton, Roy Garrett, Bill Geary, Robert West, Rick Youngblood, Joe Gage, and others not credited. Amazingly seductive soundtrack from Man Parrish; Vocal Montages based on “The Ad” by Rick L. Pollack – (you can even hear some of Roy Garrett’s erotic poetry in one or two scenes)

So he did do the music for this film also, that’s cool to know! One of the interviews posted on his website, which I’ll link below but you’ve probably seen it before, he says the following:

“At 22 years old, I did several soundtracks for porn movies. It was the only thing that actually paid me back in those days. One of those films called “Heatstroke” which is now apparently a legendary gay porn film, I did the soundtrack for. The DJ called Lance Weiss, back at the infamous Anvil club in New York City’s meat packing district, made an acetate recording of my music, off the Betamax porn tape, and played it at the club. That was the song “Heatstroke” on my first album. A friend told me about my song being played at the club so I met the DJ, and he took me up to a record company and got my song signed to a record deal, which grew into a full-length album. So to make a long story short, how did I get into the music business? Well, I have to think the porn industry for that… LOL ”

I was hoping he might have mentioned any other film titles where he knew his music was on the score, but you answered the question regarding this one. Also thanks for confirming I’m not crazy for having missed the other semi-related comment, haha :) Thanks BJ

yes, yes! surprised he doesn’t mention other porno work – but chances are he was just paid a flat fee, much like directors would’ve been too. And, you also know Joe Gage did some horror films in the 1980’s, right? So I figured I’d check ’em out, and got one of them, probably Breeders, and began watching. Not terribly good, but for some odd reason I was getting aroused! Then I realized it was the music – he reused the music from HANDsome!

This is why I always hated three-ways, somebody always gets left out while the other two have all the fun.

Thanks for figuring this one out, fellas. Now I have a new artist to explore. (but that’s the last time I tag team with you, Zeph, gimme back my poppers!)

Man Parrish’s biggest hit, by FAR, was Hip Hop Be Bop. He also produced some well known dance hits like Male Stripper (Iwasamalestripperinagogobar, repeat times 800) and Move Your Body by John Sex, both of which I remember from my pretty long ago days actually going to bars.

We didn’t leave you out Scotty, there’s plenty to go around. But BJ used up all your poppers, sorry bout it ;)

Thanks for posting that one. Not only was Handsome’s music great but so is the film. Three things, so far, in my lifetime have greatly enhanced my alone time in order of discovery:
1) Brown Bottles
2) Joe Gage’s Handsome
3) Albolene
Now if I could only find a digital copy.

Thanks, got my bid in. I just have a very worn VHS copy. Now I just need a new copy of Closed Set as my VHS of that is as well worn, or any other Joe Gage on DVD. Thanks for posting the clips and all you post. I’ve been popping over on occasion for years and appreciate your dedication to the blog. I’ve got you on my blog roll for easy access.

Thanks again. Won the bidding. I haven’t bid on eBay in years preferring the pay more to “buy it now” feature. I was awake at 4 am to make sure my high bid worked. Whew…it did with plenty of room to spare.
