Mickey & Richard

Mickey & Richard is coming in 2026!

Anyone going to be in Rotterdam (that’s The Netherlands) end of January/beginning of February? If you are, take me with you! I mean, lucky you, be sure to check out –

from wohler films:

Mickey & Richard is an intimate portrait of iconic gay model Mickey Squires, told in his own words. From the makers of Raw! Uncut! Video!, the documentary explores the challenges of maintaining a personal identity while coexisting with a porn star alter ego. Filmed on 16mm and constructed from a treasure trove of erotic archival materials, the film journeys through 50 years of LGBTQ+ history while examining one man’s struggle to find meaningful connection through the world of adult entertainment. (70 min, 2026)

I think this is the World Premiere!

Mickey & Richard will be at the 55th International Film Festival Rotterdam: 29 January – 8 February 2026

from the Festival’s site: “A portrait of 80s gay porn icon Mickey Squires and the man who performed him, Richard Bernstein, which turns from a fringe-film historical documentary into an essay on the mysteries and unpredictabilities of acting as a key activity in all our lives.”

from the men who brought us Raw! Uncut! Video! (the link should go to Kanopy – and if you have a Kanopy account, and haven’t already checked out Raw! Uncut! Video! – do it now!) a documentary about Mickey Squires. So excited for this!

gosh I want this poster! and check out the credits- Dark Entries / Josh Cheon; Steven Toushin / Bijou Video; Patrick Cowley; and of course the directors/producers: Ryan A. White and A.P. Pickle.

That is a really great poster. I love the projection of the younger Mickey on the real Richard’s back. I do sort of wish they had used color somehow. I think that could’ve added even more layers. Then again, it might have been too much. Simplicity is also effective. I just love color! The composition is really spot on. Text well chosen and well placed. Really well-balanced. It’s also a really good expression of the juxtaposition between the fantasy aspect of gay porn and the reality.

OK, that’s enough. Critique over. I always hated that part of art class.

Wish you could go BJ! I wish we could all go. It’d be my first time in the Netherlands! Hope you can get your hands on a copy of the poster at least.

It will be interesting to see (or rather, hear) which of Cowley’s songs Dark Entries allows to be used in this documentary. They have the rights to most of the recent releases which includes all the ‘porn music’ from the Fox Studio films, and quite a bit more. And could even be able to license some from his NRG hits during his lifetime, Menergy or Do You Wanna Funk etc. but I don’t know how all that works.

The doc itself looks like it should be really good, and hearing about Mickey’s life from the man himself is better than a retrospective kind of thing told by others. Maybe it will have showings at different festivals or events including closer to the states eventually too.

Someone did an interview with Mickey within the past year or two, I mentioned it in a comment where I may have left a link to his youtube channel. The one I watched was with Derrick Stanton but I’m pretty sure there was another interview with Mickey done by that same guy.

The song in the middle of your clip is Big Shot, track 1 from Afternooners; and the last song heard at the end is Mockingbird Dream 2, final track on Muscle Up. So I’m sure the song over the first 25 seconds or so is also Patrick but I didn’t place it.
