I want to know more information about the Mr. Groovy Guy contest in San Francisco, CA at the time in the early 1970’s; both Ray Todd & Jim Hughes gay porn started with winning the Mr. Groovy Guy contest.
Were the men naked then judged by their appearance? Given the Mr. Groovy Guy ads, the men were naked. But this was common then & you can see the similar naked man ads for gay bathhouses at the time.

I don’t have a lot on Ray Todd. I guess I never paid him that much attention. He’s a good-looking guy and very cute, but not totally my type. Still, I’ve explored many of his costars who have similar looks, like Jimmy Hughes and Dean Chasson, so I guess he just fell through my crack. Ha ha ha. I do love all those 1970s film loops though.
I have a folder with a few pics, but I didn’t really have a full profile on him, so once again you’ve helped me to fill out my own notes. BTW, I always credit you in my notes, even though I’m the only one who reads them. That’s weird huh? But I like to know the source of the info.
You know, I can’t decide if I like him better with the short haircut or the shag. the shaggy look makes him appear more boyish. The short cropped hair in the Beach Cowboy photos seems more manly

The California Groovy Guy contest was originally created by The Advocate founder & publisher to get away from drag queens & put a spotlight on the masculine gay men.
The contestants were not naked as I thought, but they wore really small, tight fitting bathing suits. The first Groovy Guy Contest started in 1968-1969. By 1970, the first professional gay porn film was produced & released. These two worlds merged simultaneously along with the already gay bars & gay bathhouses. The gay bathhouses started around the same time, but a year earlier in 1967. More bathhouses & gay bars emerged as more gay people moved to Los Angeles & San Francisco in the late 1960’s & 1970’s.

Danny Combs (1960’s) was the first winner of the Mr. Groovy Guy contest (1968); he also happen to star in Man Happenings, a softcore gay feature that has two men kiss on screen. It does feature male nudity, but no penetration. The first real gay porn started in 1970 when it became legal.
The Man Happenings producers expected a raid for the film, but it never happened. Combs is also featured in the Advocate magazine which had nudity at the time; it merged both gay news & naked men. The Advocate would eventually split these two features with pure gay news & the male nudity was produced under a different name, Advocate Men. Also, The Advocate had a different publisher & editor by the 1980’s.
